What ingredients should you avoid in cosmetics if you have sensitive skin?

What ingredients should you avoid in cosmetics if you have sensitive skin?

Nowadays we use at least 3 to 7 cosmetics a day including toothpaste, gel, creams and makeup, among others. And each of them has between 12 and 18 ingredients on average. So our skin is absorbing between 70 and 90 substances.

To avoid the toxicity of hygiene and beauty cosmetics, the solution is to use cosmetics that are sustainable for us and the planet.

And with the information that you are going to read below you are going to become a Beauty Expert!

ARE YOU READY?

We know that the skin is a “wrap” with unique properties: compact, resistant, but at the same time elastic and sensitive since it protects us from the outside. For this reason, when we apply a cosmetic, its active ingredients mix with the hydrolipidic mantle that covers and protects us.

The active ingredient is concentrated on the surface of the dermis and as it is absorbed, it moves to the deep layers of the dermis, hence the importance of knowing what the ingredients are in the cosmetics we use.

Have you heard about the importance of cosmetic ingredients?

Nowadays, to prevent the deterioration of products, extend their useful life, make textures creamier, make foams... active ingredients are often used that can be harmful to our health. Many of them are toxic to the immune system and are also the cause of a large number of allergic reactions and irritations.

It is simply a matter of avoiding toxins in cosmetics and replacing them with natural products free of toxicity.

Therefore, we are going to highlight the most common ones so that you can identify them:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.

It is used in soaps and shampoos for its foaming properties.

Triclosan.

Widely used in cosmetics for its antibacterial and fungicidal properties. It is common in soaps, toothpastes and deodorants. It is suspected of interfering with hormonal functions and Europe has declared it “very toxic” to aquatic organisms.

Sulfates.

We find them in daily care products such as shampoo or shower gel due to the high cleaning power they have on the skin. Its powerful action dissolves the dirt and natural oils that our skin creates as a protective barrier against external agents. Its continued use can cause problems with skin irritation and tightness, dryness or even hair loss .

Parabens.

They are used for their effectiveness as a preservative and for their bactericidal and fungicidal properties. There is much controversy about its use since a study found parabens in a high percentage of women with breast cancer. Many scientific associations consider parabens to be safe, although their long-term effect is little studied.

Petrolatum.

May contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs or PAHs in English). There are different types of PAHs and some of them have been declared carcinogenic. Exposure to this type of compounds during pregnancy is related to lower intellectual development and the appearance of asthma in the child.

Synthetic perfumes.

We can find them in facial creams, hair products and also in deodorants. One of its main problems is that the type of chemical used is not specified and many of them can cause allergies, migraines or asthma. Those who opt for toxic-free cosmetics replace them with natural perfumes that combine essential oils to give the skin a natural refreshing aroma.

Paraffins.

fake moisturizers. They are responsible for achieving apparently hydrated skin through their creamy texture. They are usually used to replace vegetable oils and do so by extracting moisture from the skin, clogging the pores and preventing the skin from breathing naturally. Over time, paraffins end up drying out the skin and causing the appearance of acne and irritations.
